Visual Narratives
Artist Reception

University Art Gallery
Meet artists invited to participate in the Visual Narratives exhibit in the University Art Gallery.  These artists combine words and images in a variety of media and sequencing to communicate stories and tales visually.  

Steve Berglund
Performance
Friday, October 24; 3:00 – 5:00 p.m.; Saturday, October 25 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.
Theatre on the Side, Moore Hall
Actor/director and CMU Theatre professor, presents Digressions:  Based on Events That May Have Been True.  This solo performance piece, written and performed by Berglund, weaves humorous and poignant stories about family and friends from the past that illuminate who we are in the present.

Beyond Barbie

Doll makers often find inspiration in local folk tales and legends.  Their hand-crafted creations help visualize the narrative.  See and hear the stories of many of these dolls from around the world.

Tim Caldwell
Presentation
Saturday, October 25; 2:00 – 2:50 p.m.
Chamichian Recital Hall, School of Music Building
Based on his experiences during the Vietnam War, Caldwell recently published The Chaplain’s Assistant:  God, Country and Vietnam.  His presentation will feature selections from the novel, as well as explore the experiences of other veterans and their families.  Caldwell is CMU’s Director of Music Theatre.

Drop-In Children’s Book Art Workshop

CMU, West Gallery
Work stations, designed and staffed by CMU’s Art department faculty and students will be available for children to create their own books and other artistic creations.  Designed for children ages 5-10.

Kevin Corbett
Film Documentary and Presentation
Friday, October 24; 1:00 – 1:50 p.m.
Charles V. Park Library Auditorium
Corbett, a CMU broadcasting and cinematic arts faculty member, will present a selection from his latest documentary following the experiences of several independent Michigan filmmakers.  The film explores the chief issues affecting their work, including technological, and ancient and contemporary concerns.

Golden Dragon Acrobats
Performance
Ticketed Event; $20 adults; $10 CMU student with ID; $6 children 10 and under; includes reception immediately following the performance.
Friday, October 24; 7:30 p.m.
In the festival’s opening performance, one of the world’s premier Chinese acrobatic ensembles will inspire and amaze with award-winning acrobatics, traditional dance, spectacular costumes, and ancient and contemporary music and theatrical techniques.

Scott Harding
Performance and Presentation

Chamichian Recital Hall, School of Music Building
Harding, a CMU School of Music faculty member, was recently commissioned to compose a three-movement work tracing the history of Mackinac Island.  The composition, Echoes of Mackinac, will be performed and stories inspiring the work, including the legend of Arch Rock and the Battle for Fort Mackinac, will be shared.

Bil Lepp

A featured past performer at the National Storytelling Festival and Smithsonian Folklife Festival.  Lepp is known for his ability to create entertaining, enlightening and humorous stories for audiences of all ages and backgrounds.

Photographer and CMU photojournalism faculty member Kent Miller will present Images Exposed:  Stories Behind the Photos Workshop, during which he will share the behind-the-scene experiences of his award-winning work. 

Mary Lou Peters

An active member of the Mackinaw Area Historical Society, Peters is the author of Mackinaw Loves Its Bridge.  The book features a collection of personal accounts of Mackinaw City residents whose lives were forever changed with the construction of the Mackinac Bridge. Her more recent book, Mackinac Island Meditations, features Mary Lou’s personal paintings of the island.

A retired teacher and former member of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, Snyder will present The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald and Stories of the Eighth Sea, exploring the story of one of the Great Lakes’ most famous and mysterious shipwrecks.

“One Crazy Raven” is a presentation of contemporary and traditional Native American storytelling, music, song and dance.  This program addresses the possibilities of empowerment, leadership, respect, spirit and Honor.  Gene has twenty years experience as a performing artist, speaker, trainer and motivator and has a rich Cherokee, Tlingit and Filipino heritage.

Margaret Willey

Willey is the author of the award-winning Clever Beatrice children’s series, which follows the adventures of a young girl living in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.  She has also told stories of French Canadian folklore to audiences of all ages.

This award-winning storyteller uses music, acting and visual art to create captivating recollections of original and traditional tales, focusing on African and African-American cultures.

Frosty Wyrick

The retired Central Michigan University employee constructed a 101-foot built to scale replica of the Mackinac Bridge, previously on display at CMU’s Charles V. Park Library.  His presentation will focus on the construction of the Mighty Mac and his experience building the replica.

Claudene Exhibit

Detroit artist Deborah Friedman has captured the innocence of youth and the essence of Detroit’s past in a series of colorful and intricate paintings.  The contemporary narrative represents the childhood memories of Friedman and her closest friend, Claudene.

Michigan Moments Photo Exhibit

Featuring photography by CMU photojournalism faculty member Kent Miller.  The exhibit will illustrate the beautiful surroundings of eastern Michigan and feature photos from Miller’s Michigan 24/7 Coffee Table Book, in addition to other selections.

Michigan Story Festival Mural

Michigan-based muralist, Tom Woodruff works with students from the Morey Charter School to create the annual festival mural.  This piece portrays the highlights and essence of the 2007 Michigan Story Festival.  Murals from festivals past will also be displayed.

Visual Narratives

University Art Gallery
This exhibit features artistic works of a variety of media, focusing on the use of visual art as a means of communication via narrative sequencing.  Handmade books, quilts, paintings, sculptures, and more will be displayed.
